چکیده

Bell's palsy is the most frequent disease of the seventh cranial nerve, with a good prognosis. More than 70% patients attain complete clinical recovery, with no noticeable residua. Persistent sequellas are usually noted in cases with profound axonal loss only. Electrophysiological tests may offer valuable information in defining the severity of nerve injury and a possible subsequent disfunction. For these reasons these tests could be significant prognostic parameters. Fifty patients with clinical signs of Bell's palsy were included in our investigation. We analysed clinical signs (the degree of facial muscle palsy) and electrophysiological tests (amplitude and latency of evoked muscle potential, latency of early component of Blink reflex) on the third, seventh and fourteenth day of the onset of palsy. Our results show that electrophysiological parameters are of early prognostic importance in Bell's palsy. Based on electrophysiological parametars, it is possible to predict the duration of clinical recovery and the outcome of the disease.

The prognostic value of electroneurography of Bell's palsy at the orbicularis oculi versus nasolabial fold.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS We compared the prognostic value of different placements measured by electroneurography (ENoG) in Bell's palsy, especially among patients with poor results on ENoG. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study using electrodiagnostic data and medical chart review from August 2006 to June 2013 was performed of patients who were diagnosed with Bell's palsy. METHODS We included 81 pa...

Acupuncture-induced changes in functional connectivity of the primary somatosensory cortex varied with pathological stages of Bell’s palsy

Bell's palsy is the most common cause of acute facial nerve paralysis. In China, Bell's palsy is frequently treated with acupuncture. However, its efficacy and underlying mechanism are still controversial. In this study, we used functional MRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the functional connectivity of the brain in Bell's palsy patients and healthy individuals. The patients were ...

Prognostic value of minimal excitability of facial nerve in Bell's palsy.

Nerve excitability is useful for prognosis in Bell's palsy. Minimal excitability values (MEV) were obtained by stimulating the facial nerve and recording the effective current (mA) required to evoke a minimal visible contraction of frontalis, orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and mentalis muscles respectively. Serial MEVs were performed on 100 patients with facial palsy, of whom 87 were foll...
